Banded agate, surprisingly, is a stone of stability, creativity, and comfort. Geologically, banded agate is a variety of chalcedony that forms due to a process called deposition. Over many years layers of sediment will settle in groundwater reserves and cavities, slowly crystallizing and creating bands of color due to various impurities in the microscopic quartz structure. This leaves us with a huge variety of color, patterns, and varieties of agate that are simply stunning to look at and a thrill to collect. It is not uncommon for quartz to form in geode pockets with agate, such as in this mushroom carving. It is absolutely gorgeous!
